Reminder….no school on Monday, February 20th.
See you on Tuesday, February 21st. Enjoy your long weekend!
100th Day!
Monday, February 13th was the 100th day of school! The fifth grade students celebrated by doing a math activity. Stuents were given a sheet with $100 and cut out ads of items they would like to have. Then, students added these items up to $100.00! This fun activity celebrated our hard work in the last 100 days of school and reviewed our 5th grade math standard of adding and subtracting with decimals. Way to go!
Nutrition Lesson
On Monday, Amy Pleimling, the dietitian from Hy-Vee came to our classroom to present our second nutrition lesson for the year. The students reviewed how many servings to eat/drink from all food groups daily. The students also learned how much sugar they are consuming while drinking their favorite drinks and what too much sugar can do to their bodies. Thank you Amy and great job fifth grade students!

February is 'I Love to Read' Month!
Competition:
Each evening, you will read a ‘good fit’ book at home. Write down the amount of minutes that you read each night. Your parent/guardian must initial your minutes each night. On Thursday nights, please total your weekly minutes and have your parent initial that date. Then bring this sheet back to school on Friday. In our homeroom classes, we will chart our reading minutes for the month. **Only reading minutes completed at HOME count for your reading log minutes.J
Motivation:
--If you’ve totaled your weekly minutes and you have a parent initial, you will be a part of our end of the week drawing in your classroom.
--The student from each classroom who reads the most minutes at the end of the month will win a book from a book order.
GOOD LUCK!
--Ms. Busch, Mr. Rassler, & Miss Boyd
***For the entire month of February, Hawthorne will be celebrating our love of reading with many fun activities, presentations, prizes, and more! |
2nd/5th Grade Buddies
On Thursday, our 5th grade students collaborated with their 2nd grade buddies to make a poster for our contest next week. February is I Love to Read month and they designed posters to promote reading...check some of them out below!
Reading Rocks!!! Visualizing
On Wednesday, some of our 5th graders presented with Mrs. Peterson at our Hawthorne Reading Rocks assembly! These students did a great job of teaching Hawthorne students about the reading skill of visualizing. Please help your child to make a 'mental movie' when they are reading their favorite books at home!
