Reading Rocks - Main Idea

Miss Miller and Miss Miller,  yes they are sisters, organized the Reading Rocks Assembly for November.  Their performance was spectacular!  The story used was Skippyjon Jones.  It is a story about a cat, that really just wants to be a chihuahua!  Ian, Taylor, Isis, Solia, and Lexy were also part of the performance.  It is always fun to see 5th graders on stage!

Here are some quotes from the 5th Graders regarding the Corn Maze trip:
The hayride was fun because everyone was singing!  Kayla

Playing on the playground because the equipment was really cool!.  Taylor L
My favorite thing was the park because of this awesome swing and a zip line.  Ian

Llama Llama Red Pajama

Across the elementary school's in Albert Lea today, all students heard the book Llama Llama Red Pajama read to them on YouTube by the author of the book.  We ate popcorn while we listened to the story.  Afterwards, we went out side to meet two real llamas, Rascal and Percy!!   We learned information about them!  What a fun day of learning of Hawthorne!

5th Grade Rocks!!

We have had a fabulous start to the school year!  The 5th Graders are taking their role seriously of being awesome role models for the younger students at Hawthorne.
They have just started in their reading groups, where we are focusing on reading "Just Right" books.  We had a school reading assembly as well with four of our 5th Graders doing a fantastic job acting in a skit. They rocked!
For math, the students are working on the standards.
Miss Boyd is teaching science and Mr. Rassler is teaching social studies.
We are getting into our routine!!
The School Patrol students have all been trained and are busy protecting the students at Hawthorne!

CLOUDS

Dear 5th Graders,
Have you been noticing the magnificent clouds this summer?  This past year we learned about them.  Today I notice lots of stratus clouds!
The Big and Little Dipper have been also easy to see on these clear nights.  Explore away this summer!  If you can't remember the details, just goggle them to refresh your memory.
I hope you are all having a fabulous summer.  I just got back from visiting Lake Superior.  It is just pristine!   I found lots of interesting rocks.  The layers in them were beautiful.
Email me and let me know what you have been doing this summer.
One last thing, Mrs. Petersen recommended a fabulous book for me to read this summer.  I am loving it.  I hope you are reading a good book too!
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Mrs. Dorman    (PS, Hope is doing great too!  She chewed up my garden hose though,  grrr...)

Reading in Action!

This month, the students put all of their reading knowledge to script writing!  They took a topic they have been reading about, and turned it into a presentation.  They did a spectacular job.  They used lots of different types of presentation skills, including a dance, food tasting with a little kitchen set up (just like on the food network of course)  a talk show, and inserted Youtube videos which enhanced the topic!  What a talented group of youth we have!
